Welcome back to a new school year! Many troops are starting back up again after a summer break. If you are interested in joining Girl Scouts, we have some registration and information events coming up. Girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to join Girl Scouts.
Sunday September 7th, 1pm – 3pm at Depot Park. Join us for some fun outdoor activities and learn more about joining (or starting) a new Troop.
Wednesday, September 10th, 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Sonoma Valley Library. Join us in the Community Room at the Library for information about Girl Scouts.
Sofia Serbicki and Renee Serota have been Girl Scouts since Second Grade. As Cadettes, they decided to do the Silver Award Project for the Sonoma Valley Library because they both love books and were aware that the Library needed help. Initially they wanted to raise funds for the Library to be open on Mondays again. They chose Clare O’Brien as their Silver Award Advisor and she told them that the Library would not be able to open Mondays again, because they are part of a county wide system that chose to close Mondays. Also the girls discovered that fund-raising is not an acceptable project for the Silver Award. So they decided to create ways for teens to use the Library more. After doing research the girls discovered that other near by Libraries had a Youth or Teen Advisory Board so they decided to create one for our local Library. They created polls, and emails and letters, finding teens who were interested. The Board is called the “Teen Leadership Council” or TLC for short. The Council meets monthly, and sometimes every other month. The Leadership Council recommends books and writes book reviews in a binder that Clare has at the Library for all teens to make contributions of book reviews. The TLC will send a member to the adult Library Board Meetings to hear what they are doing and to give Teen advice on books, activities and suggestions to increase teen presence at the Library. Teens who are interested in joining the TLC can get an application from Clare at the library desk.
Troop 10141 has earned their Bronze Award (the highest award that can be earned by a Junior Girl Scout) for their Anti-Bullying project. Troop 10141 completed a project that involved researching, designing and distributing an anti-bullying magazine designed for kids in grades K-6th. The girls wrote the articles, designed fun informative games and created all the artwork in the magazine. A digital copy of the magazine can be seen here: ABCMagazine
The girls hosted a Scout Shout event on September 30th where they invited all of the Sonoma Girl Scouts to participate in Friendship and Anti-Bullying activities. The girls in attendance took a handprint pledge against bullying and helped create a friendship chain of paper dolls. The handprints, dolls and a hard copy of the magazine are currently on display at the Sonoma Valley Library.

Girl Scouting is the place for girls to have fun, make friends, and try new experiences such as turning ordinary household items into robots, volunteering with a coastal clean-up, planting redwood saplings, or hiking along the Pacific Coast Trail!
“We want every girl in Sonoma Valley to be so excited about the adventures she’ll have with us that she can hardly wait for it, because she knows she can do anything she sets her mind to,” said Jessa Rank, the Service Unit Director for Sonoma, “That feeling starts with parents who encourage their daughters, and volunteers who are role models.”
“It’s our volunteers who are the backbone of the Girl Scout Program. There are a variety of ways you can work with the girls including leading a troop, sharing your special hobby or talent, or even helping at a one-time event. We always need adults (both men and women) that have a willingness to inspire the girls”, commented Rank.
The Girl Scout Program is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of today’s girls. Girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Girls learn the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment. Girl Scouting is for every girl, everywhere – where today’s girls can become tomorrow’s leaders.
Membership in Girl Scouts is open to girls ages 5-17; women and men over 17 can join as adult members. Girl Scout annual membership is only $15 a year, and families can apply for financial aid.
